How a SMALL CHANGE in your rep scheme could BOOST your MUSCLE GAINS
if you are working out like most people, you are using a rep scheme of 6-12 repetitions for muscle mass.
You could read it anywhere and this seems to be one of the iron rules in bodybuilding.
But following this rule will hold you back from serious gains!
Almost nobody can tell you why you should perform this rep scheme for muscle mass.
Some people will tell you that 6 reps is 80% of your one rep maximum - the range where most muscle fibers get involved.
But can you really perform 6 reps with 80% of your one rep max?
I can't tell you, but what I can tell you is that you are probably wasting a lot of your gains by blindly following this rule.
Don't get me wrong, I believed that performing 6-12 reps is an iron rule for achieving maximum muscle gains. This all changed when I started to test the one rep maximum on all my training clients. What came out is that a few of my clients could do more than 20 reps with 80% of their one rep maximum, while others could only do 3 reps with 80% of their one rep maximum.
After using the individual scheme of between 3 and more than 20 reps for muscle gains, almost all of my clients made better gains.
Some even doubled their progress rate instantly after changing the rep scheme for muscle gains.
So please test your one rep maximum and load 80% on your one rep maximum on the bar and test how many reps you could do.
To get a little bit more advanced I would advise you to take the time while performing your reps.
I always use this technique beneath others with good success in my personal training Software X-Size (http://www.x-size.com/) for one
good reason: Not anybody uses the same speed for their repetitions
But there is also another trick hidden in it. By this you could know if Creatine is useful for you.
But now I want to leave the theoretical part behind and start with an practical example.
Test your one rep maximum on two different body parts.
At first test your one rep maximum for barbell bicep curls and write it down. If you didn't choose the right weight at the first time (almost nobody could do this) take 3 minutes off - before you try it a second or third time. (for example your TESTED one rep maximum for barbell curls is 100lbs)
At second test your one rep maximum for leg extensions. (for example your TESTED one rep maximum for barbell curls is 200lbs)
After you did do this - pause for 10 minutes. In this time calculate 80% of your one rep maximum for barbell curls (100 * 0,8 = 80 lbs) and the leg extensions (200 * 0,8 = 160)
Now you know your real one rep maximum for both exercises.
After the 10 minutes pause you should load 80lbs on the barbell for testing your repetitions.
For example you are able to perform 9 repetitions for barbell curls with 80 lbs. So 9 repetitions is your optimum rep scheme for barbell curls.
After another 10 minutes of pause you could make the same test with the leg extensions.
For example you could do 15 leg extensions with 160 lbs. So this means you should always aim for 15 repetitions for leg extensions because this gives you the best muscle gains.
Did you take your time for the reps?
If so I can tell you the following:
If your time for each of both exercises was below 60 seconds Creatine could be quite useful for you.
If your time was even below 40 seconds for each of both exercises and you didn't try Creatine - what are you waiting for? It will definitely give you a good boost in muscle mass.
One final advice I would like to give you. You should do this test for any exercise you are performing. Probably you have seen, that you get different results for different body parts. But you will also get different results for different exercises for the same body part.
This is because every exercise involves slightly different muscle fibers. So probably your optimum rep scheme for barbell curls is 9 reps, but for preacher bench curls it could be 6 reps.
Probably this sounds over the edge for you. But think twice! I involved this technique in my Software X-Size (http://www.x-size.com/) beneath other techniques to boost muscle gains for good reason.
Probably this technique alone could give you "only" 20% more muscle
gains but it could also double your progress rate. This sums up over
the time to big gains. And if you add some more of these tricks in your
training schedule you could double or even triple your progress rate

How a single progress scheme could DOUBLE your GAINS
last week I told you how a small change in your rep scheme could boost your muscle gains.
It was about how to determine your optimum rep scheme for all exercises. This article is directly connected to my last article so probably you should read it again, if you did forget it. The techniques described in these two articles work in synergy and adapting booth to your current workout schedule will give you a significant boost in your gains.
Did you ever hear about the double progress scheme?
Chances are good, but probably you don't know the name.
Double progress means that you increase the weight for any exercise after you are able to perform a predefined number of reps.
For example you are increasing your weight on bench presses after you are able to do more than 10 reps.
This is called double progress, because you progress your reps before you progress your weight.
This is well known and almost anybody is using it.
But is it the best way to go?
Probably not for you!
By using a double progress scheme, you are trying to progress two different systems of your body at the same time.
1. with increasing your reps you are trying to enhance the energy systems of your muscles
2. with increasing the weight you are trying to enhance the performance of your muscle fibers
These two systems don't mix up to well. In fact it's like trying to walk at two sides of a street at the same time.
While working out with different training clients I found out that all clients hit sometimes a plateau because they were not able to perform one more rep for weeks.
But at the same time, it is no problem for them to add 5 pounds and keep the same rep number.
For example one of my clients was able to bench press 260 pounds for
8 reps. But he wasn't able to make one more repetition for 6 weeks before he consulted me.
So I told him, that he could increase his weight by 2.5 pounds without decreasing his reps.
He didn't believe me, but he tried to do this. And of course it worked. It didn't only work one time - it worked 5 times in a row. So he was able to increase his bench press weight by 12.5 pounds in 5 training units without doing less than 8 repetitions.
After this he reached his second plateau. He wasn't able to increase the weight and keeping up the 8 reps. So I told him to decrease his reps and keep increasing the weight.
After this he was able to increase his weight at 7 repetitions another 3 times in a row - summing up to 20 pounds more bench press power in a few weeks.
After an additional 3 week special endurance cycle where his energy systems where targeted he was able to bench press 280 pounds for 10
Could you think how happy he was? He planned to bench press 270 pounds in this time with his double progress scheme before he hit the plateau.
But with separating the two progress schemes, he didn't not only work
around the plateau - instead he doubled his progress rate.
Believe me or not - this happens over and over again. And because of this I suggest that you try out to go for single progress scheme instead of a double progress scheme.

And this is what you also should do if you are not using it. If you hit your next plateau - don't get frustrated. It's not anytime over training - sometimes it could be that you did try to walk on both sides of the street at the same time.
But how fits this together with the optimum rep scheme discussed last week?
Determine your optimum rep scheme - only increase the weights - until you can't do this anymore. After this - work on your muscles energy systems. If you do this, you add the next gains to your big time goal.
